  • A Look Back at 2023: Progress Towards the Treatment of Aging as a Medical Condition

    Updated: 2023-12-29 16:44:09
The market has been in the doldrums and it has been a tough year for fundraising, both for non-profits and biotech startups. The conferences have exhibited more of an academic focus as companies tightened belts and postponed investment rounds, while investors stayed home. Not that this halts the flow of hype for some projects, and nor has it slowed media commentary on the longevity industry as it presently stands. A few of the articles in that commmentary are even interesting to read! The field has grown and is more mature now than has ever been the case. Biotech of all forms is a challenging field with a high failure rate, but the biotechnology of treating aging looks to become a vast industry in the years […]

  • Blunt Thoughts on Calculating the Revealed Value of Human Life

    Updated: 2023-12-28 19:31:09
Bloodless, heartless calculations of the value of your life are constantly taking place behind the curtains that society politely draws over some of the uglier realities of the human condition. Interactions with insurance companies might be the most visible signs of these calculations, but this is the tip of the iceberg. Humans assign value instinctively; to value is to be human. We don't just value objects, we value our lives, we value the lives of others. Based on an analysis of our actions, i.e. revealed preferences, one can estimate monetary equivalents to those life valuations and how they shift with time and circumstances. These estimates are produced constantly, and widely used in policy and industry circles, whether or not we might agree with them. For […]

  • Reviewing What is Known of the Mechanisms of Taurine Supplementation Relevant to Aging and Metabolism

    Updated: 2023-12-27 19:58:20
Taurine is a semi-essential amino acid. Dietary taurine supplementation has been shown to modestly slow aging in mice, though as for all such interventions there is always the question of whether it will prove to be less useful in humans, and also whether these results in mice will be disproved by the much more rigorous Interventions Testing Program (ITP), once that group gets around to assessing taurine supplementation. Few of the numerous interventions thought to modestly slow aging in mice on the basis of earlier research actually held up once subjected to the ITP degree of experimental rigor. Speculatively, taurine may produce its benefits by affecting levels of the antioxidant glutathione. More research is needed on this topic, but if confirmed it would make taurine […]

  • Fibroblast Senescence in the Aging Dermis

    Updated: 2023-12-27 11:22:01
A growing body of evidence points to a significant role for senescent cells in the aging of skin, including the work of some researchers who believe that changes that occur in skin over early adult life may be influenced by the presence of senescent cells. Skin is a large organ and its state of inflammation does influence the rest of the body. It remains to be seen as to whether presently available senolytic therapies can produce a meaningful effect on the burden of senescent cells in skin, and to what degree that will affect manifestations of skin aging in humans. Skin aging is characterized by changes in its structural, cellular, and molecular components in both the epidermis and dermis. Dermal aging is distinguished by reduced […]

  • Finding that statins could slow dementia stimulates further research

    Updated: 2023-12-20 06:19:34
Blood fat-lowering statins could slow the progression of Alzheimer's disease, at least for some patients. But the researchers are cautious in their interpretations and see the results as a first step in a research journey that may eventually provide the answer.

  • Early-life diseases linked to lifelong childlessness

    Updated: 2023-12-18 05:59:59
A groundbreaking study reveals a significant association between 74 early-life diseases and the likelihood of remaining childless throughout one's life, with 33 of these diseases prevalent in both women and men.

  • Very irregular sleep linked to higher risk of dementia

    Updated: 2023-12-14 02:25:27
People who have very irregular sleep patterns may have a higher risk of dementia than those who have more regular sleep patterns, according to new research. The study does not prove that sleep irregularity causes dementia. It only shows an association.

  • New study reveals latest data on global burden of cardiovascular disease

    Updated: 2023-12-11 16:46:21
A world without cardiovascular disease (CVD) is possible, yet millions of lives are lost prematurely to heart disease each year, according to the new report. The report provides an update of health estimates for the global, regional and national burden and trends of CVD from 1990-2022 by analyzing the impact of cardiovascular conditions and risk factors across 21 global regions.

  • Genetic mutations that promote reproduction tend to shorten human lifespan, study shows

    Updated: 2023-12-09 00:00:04
A study based on a review of genetic and health information from more than 276,000 people finds strong support for a decades-old evolutionary theory that sought to explain aging and senescence.

  • Serotonin loss may contribute to cognitive decline in the early stages of Alzheimer's disease

    Updated: 2023-12-07 21:09:07
Comparing PET scans of more than 90 adults with and without mild cognitive impairment (MCI), researchers say relatively lower levels of the so-called 'happiness' chemical, serotonin, in parts of the brain of those with MCI may play a role in memory problems including Alzheimer's disease.

  • Light therapy may improve symptoms of Alzheimer's disease

    Updated: 2023-12-06 20:05:19

  • Predicting which of our organs will fail first

    Updated: 2023-12-06 16:59:23
A new study demonstrates a simple way of studying organ aging by analyzing distinct proteins, or sets of them, in blood, enabling the prediction of individuals' risk for diseases.

  • New findings reveal important insights into age-related nonresolving inflammation

    Updated: 2023-12-06 16:58:58
Aging is associated with chronic, nonresolving inflammation, or 'inflammaging,' that can lead to tissue dysfunction. New findings reveal insights into the cellular programs and factors that promote the resolution of inflammation during aging. These findings may lead to the development of new strategies to limit age-related organ decline.

  • New protein linked to early-onset dementia identified

    Updated: 2023-12-06 16:58:45
Scientists have identified abnormal aggregates of a protein called TAF15 in the brains of individuals with early-onset dementia, known as frontotemporal dementia, where the cause was not previously known.

  • Newly identified biomarkers may detect early cognitive decline via blood test

    Updated: 2023-12-05 22:06:45
For some people, extreme stressors like psychiatric disorders or childhood neglect and abuse can lead to a range of health problems later in life, including depression, anxiety and cardiovascular disease. A new study identified genetic indicators that can predict another health problem, the decline of cognitive abilities, among people who have been affected by these extreme stressors.

  • Depression, constipation, and urinary tract infections may precede MS diagnosis

    Updated: 2023-12-05 22:06:37
In some diseases, the underlying processes can start years before a diagnosis is made. A new study finds that people who later develop multiple sclerosis (MS) are more likely to have conditions like depression, constipation and urinary tract infections five years before their MS diagnosis than people who do not develop MS. The study also found that sexual problems and bladder infections, or cystitis, are more likely in people who later develop MS.

  • Older organs accelerate aging in transplant recipients

    Updated: 2023-12-05 19:42:12
A study found that in preclinical models, transplanting older organs can trigger senescence in younger recipients. They observed that young and middle-aged mice that received heart transplants from older mice had impaired physical capacity, with reduced running times and grip strengths. Middle-aged mice who received older hearts also showed increased anxiety-related behavior, impaired memory and poorer learning performances.
