  • What does the Bank of England's 'credibility' actually mean?

    Updated: 2011-07-29 14:25:53
When we hear debates about the “credibility” of the Bank of England, or of the government’s deficit reduction programme, what does that word actually mean?  “Credibility” is an economists’ term of art, closely connected with another piece of jargon – a “commitment technology”.  A commitment technology is some means of committing ourselves.  A promise would [...]

  • A US debt deal will be done, but it will offer only temporary respite

    Updated: 2011-07-29 09:42:51
After another humiliating defeat for John Boehner’s bill, where are we now in the hunt for a compromise to head off US default and government shutdown? No nearer a deal, that’s where. It’s a quarter to midnight and House Republicans cannot even agree among themselves on the way forward, let alone reach an accord with [...]

  • What now for gas prices?

    Updated: 2011-07-28 11:20:15
It’s a tale of two perspectives this morning, with results from British Gas owner Centrica and oil major Royal Dutch Shell. One the one hand, we have Simon Henry, finance director of Shell, saying that: “Gas prices are not particularly high at the moment.” Meanwhile, British Gas, which made a £518m profit, says the fact that gas [...]

  • Why gold price will fall when US debt talks hit deadline next week

    Updated: 2011-07-28 08:50:05
Some long-term bulls predict the gold price will fall next week when talks to lift the American debt ceiling hit the August 2 deadline. That seems counter-intuitive when fears about a US default or a credit rating agency downgrade of Treasury bonds helped drive the gold price to record highs. But, as President Barack Obama and [...]

Just recently I’ve been rereading The Great Gatsby by Scott Fiztgerald. Contrary to received wisdom, it’s not his best novel, which is Tender is the Night – obviously – but Gatsby is more fun and if the definition of the truly great novel is to have contemporary relevance way beyond its time, the Great Gatsby [...]

    Updated: 2011-07-11 20:57:08
