  • Sea-Floor Sunday #72: Indus submarine canyon

    Updated: 2010-08-29 16:00:38
The ongoing flooding of the Indus River in Pakistan inspired me to search for an image of the Indus submarine canyon for this week’s Sea-Floor Sunday image. The image below is from this website describing a research cruise in 2008-2009 that acquired multibeam bathymetry data and cores. Check out the site for more details about [...]

  • Friday Field Foto #122: Channelized Miocene strata, Tierra del Fuego

    Updated: 2010-08-27 16:00:06
This week’s Friday Field Foto is from some Miocene beach-cliff exposures on the Atlantic coast of Tierra del Fuego. These sandstones are characterized by a mix of ‘normal’ turbidites thick successions of traction-dominated (including large climbing dunes) deposits. Also note the surface cutting down from left to right in upper part of cliff — a [...]

  • An Island’s Rebirth: Life emerges After a Catastrophic Volcanic Eruption

    Updated: 2010-08-26 00:47:16
Anchorage, Alaska — A secluded island in the Aleutian chain is revealing secrets of how land and marine ecosystems react to and recover from a catastrophic volcanic eruption that appeared at first glance to destroy all life on the island. Yet little by little – a wingless beetle here, a tuft of grass there, Kasatochi, an island in the Alaska Maritime National Wildlife Refuge rarely studied by scientists before its Aug. 7, 2008, volcanic eruption, is showing signs of recovery.

Many of Asia’s glaciers are retreating as a result of climate change. This retreat impacts water supplies to millions of people, increases the likelihood of outburst floods that threaten life and property in nearby areas, and contributes to sea-level rise. The U.S

  • Summary of 2009 Utah Mineral Released

    Updated: 2010-08-25 18:24:54
Utah’s mineral extraction industry recorded a successful year on 2009, according to a recently released publication. The Utah Geological Survey’s (UGS) 2009 Summary of Mineral Activity in Utah publication reveals that despite a recession induced dip from peak commodity values in 2008, Utah ranked third nationally in the value of nonfuel minerals produced in 2009, accounting [...]

Overall, Utah’s contribution was logged at 7 percent of the total value of the country’s [...]

  • UTAHNS WARMING TO SOLAR ENERGY SYSTEMS

    Updated: 2010-08-19 17:21:41
sltrib.com nvironmentalists long have dreamed of a time when the massive coal-fired plants that generate much of the nation’s electricity will fall idle, replaced by small, nonpolluting power production on individual homes and businesses. For a slowing growing number of Utahns that dream no longer seems so far-fetched. When Doug Shipley of Intermountain Wind & Solar opens the [...]

This week’s Friday Field Foto is from the Upper Cretaceous Magallanes Basin strata in southern Chile. The “natural” outcrops in this region are exceptional, but a geologist will always take advantage of roadcuts when they can. The national park in this region is attracting more visitors with each passing year, which has resulted in some [...]
