  • Bruce Schneier on the importance of trust in society

    Updated: 2012-03-27 01:00:37
Bruce Schneier, internationally renowned security expert and author, discusses his new book entitled, "Liars & Outliers: Enabling the Trust That Society Needs To Thrive." Schneier starts the discussion by looking at society and trust, and explains why he thinks the two are necessary for civilization. According to Schneier, two concepts contribute to a trustful society: first, humans are mostly moral; second, informal reputation systems incentivize trustworthy behavior. The discussion turns to technology and trust, and Schneier talks about how the information society yields greater consequences when trust is breached. He then describes how society deals with technology and trust and why he thinks the system is not perfect but working well overall.

  • Two views of hyperinflation

    Updated: 2012-03-26 00:06:24
Argentina is the gift that keeps on giving to teachers of economics.  No matter how dumb we may seem, we’re never as dumb as Argentina’s leaders. Here are two views of hyperinflation, those periodic bouts of very high inflation we see from time to time all over the world (Brazil, Argentina, Israel, Zimbabwe).  The traditional view [...]

    Updated: 2012-03-16 20:09:21
A post by John Asker Greg Smith’s vocal exit from Goldman Sachs generated an enormous amount of discussion.  One of the issues raised is whether clients understand when their banks are conflicted.  Certainly in some cases they do; see the ruling related to Goldman’s multiple roles in the El Paso sale, which we found via [...]

    Updated: 2012-03-16 16:10:59
As Jon Stewart would say, the Goldman resignation letter is comedy gold — see, for example, here.  But once we’re done laughing, we’re left with some questions:  Has the culture has changed on Wall Street, and if it has, why?  Have things gotten worse, or is this the kind of change you’d expect to see [...]

    Updated: 2012-03-15 13:21:15
This one comes from Chris Telmer, a great piece about how national differences in drug prices are arbitraged in the EU.  The differences in prices are the result of national healthcare policies, with some countries extracting lower prices from drug companies than others.  The possibility of arbitrage stems from the EU’s single-market principle, which allows free [...]

    Updated: 2012-03-15 02:13:52
A post by Kim Schoenholtz For decades, financial institutions have used stress tests to assess their well-being. These tests usually simulate the performance of one bank in a scenario that could make it illiquid (unable to sell assets or to borrow) or insolvent (liabilities exceed assets). Until recently, however, typical test scenarios were far less [...]

Up through the Depression, financial panics were marked by runs at banks, as depositors rushed to withdraw their money while money was still available.  Even solvent banks were caught out.  The classic solution is deposit insurance, with the government guaranteeing bank deposits and regulating banks to prevent insolvencies that would burden taxpayers.  In the US, [...]
