• Challenges faced by patients with mast cell disorders

    Updated: 2023-10-22 02:26:28
As an allergist/immunologist, the spectrum of mast cell disorders, including mastocytosis, idiopathic anaphylaxis, chronic hives, and angioedema, is not a new concept. That said, in recent years, we have seen an uptick in patients presenting with a spectrum of symptoms attributed to misbehaving mast cells. Although the medical community has acquired extensive knowledge of these Read more… Challenges faced by patients with mast cell disorders originally appeared in KevinMD.com. In conclusion, a number of studies have shown that CD4+ Treg cells are crucial in the maintenance of peripheral tolerance and have an important role in the control of atherosclerosis-related inflammation. Therefore, Treg cells are a promising target of major research efforts focused on immune-modulating therapies against atherosclerosis. Developing anti-atherosclerotic Treg-based therapies faces challenges. However, rapid progress in genetic, epigenetic, and molecular aspects of cellular immunology gives hope for a fast-track solution. «Back to Top Delivering Senolytic Nanoparticles to Atherosclerotic Plaques in Mice https://www.fightaging.org/archives/2023/10/delivering-senolytic-nanoparticles-to-atherosclerotic-plaques-in-mice/ Cells become senescent i...

This article reviews the current regulatory role of miR-7 in inflammation and related diseases, including viral infection, autoimmune hepatitis, inflammatory bowel disease, and encephalitis. It expounds on the molecular mechanism by which miR-7 regulates the occurrence of inflammatory diseases. Finally, the existing problems and future development directions of miR-7-based intervention on inflammation and related diseases are discussed to provide new references and help strengthen the understanding of the pathogenesis of inflammation and related diseases, as well as the development of new strategies for clinical intervention. «Back to Top DNA Damage and Consequent Inflammation in Heart Failure https://www.fightaging.org/archives/2023/09/dna-damage-and-consequen...

  • Identifying a Stem Cell Population in the Adult Thymus

    Updated: 2023-10-22 02:26:28
Researchers here report on the characterization of a stem cell population in the adult thymus that gives rise to the thymic epithelial cells that allow the thymus to host the development of T cells of the adaptive immune system. This is of interest because the thymus atrophies with age, losing active thymic epithelial tissue. The supply of new T cells provided to the immune system diminishes greatly as a consequence, and this is a major contributing factor in the age-related decline of immune function. It is the case that cell therapy approaches are one of the potential ways in which an aged thymus might be regenerated, and the discovery of a stem cell population associated with this tissue can only help these efforts. The thymus is necessary for lifelong immunological tolerance a...

  • Ragweed allergy peaks during college football season

    Updated: 2023-10-22 02:26:28
Not only is it kickoff time for college football season, but it’s also prime time for fall allergies. For the 50 million Americans who suffer from ragweed allergy, the late summer and early fall signal the onset of runny noses, sneezing, congestion, cough, itchy watery eyes, and in more severe cases, sinus infections and asthma Read more… Ragweed allergy peaks during college football season originally appeared in KevinMD.com. This study aimed to investigate the association between frailty index and circulating CAP2 concentration in 467 community-dwelling older adults (median age: 79; range: 65-92 years). The selected robust regression model showed that circulating CAP2 concentration was not associated with chronological age, as well as sex and education. However, circulating CAP2 concentration was significantly and inversely associated with the frailty index: a 0.1-unit increase in frailty index leads to ~0.5-point mean decrease in CAP2 concentration. Furthermore, mean CAP2 concentration was significantly lower in frail participants (i.e., frailty index ≥0.25) than in non-frail participants. This study shows the association between serum CAP2 concentration and frailty status for the first time, highl...
